Heber East Ward School

  • ;Built in Heber, Utah in 1865
  • ;Replicated in 1996

Built of red sandstone from the mountains near Heber City, this building was used for school and church meetings. The year 1890 brought about Utah's Free School Law, but before then teachers received their salary as a result of students' tuition. With money being scarce, teachers were often paid in lumber, produce, and other material goods. Sometimes parents boarded the teacher as a means of tuition payment.

The flag in the school is a copy of the Great Flag of Deseret, dating to 1851. The proposal for the State of Deseret was denied by the U.S. Congress, and the much smaller Territory of Utah was established instead.
