Furniture stores were important to pioneer society, since it was hard and cumbersome to bring furniture across the plains and through the mountains. This store was founded by Hans and Louise Madsen, emigrants from Denmark whose forefathers were furniture craftsmen famous for their "perlemorkiste," handcrafted chests inlaid with mother-of-pearl. The Madsens arrived in the Utah Territory in 1875, just six years after the advent of the railroad, leading them to open a furniture shop that offered both manufactured and handcrafted goods.
