SHAVING PARLOR

1860’s
Built in 1995

This is a reproduction of a typical small wood-frame barbershop. Barber Shops were introduced as settlements grew into larger communities and were often combined with other businesses. These barber shops provided shaving, hair care, and minor medical and dental services.

Many barbers used a single mug with shaving soap for all their customers. The razor was a large steel blade sharpened on a heavy piece of leather known as a razor strop. Mustaches were waxed with a special wax to keep them in the desired shape. The barber would singe the ends of his customers’ hair with a special barber’s candle to keep the ends from splitting.
