Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, 1868
Built in 1995
Our bank is a replica of the original, which later became known as the Bank of Deseret (1871), Deseret National Bank (1871), and was the forerunner of First Security Bank, now Wells Fargo. It was housed in an adobe building with a false wooden front and was located on Salt Lake’s traditional banking corner of 100 South and Main Street. As Utah’s first state bank, it was the first to make long-term loans available to businesses. In most areas of the West, banks were one of the earliest businesses to develop after settlement, for they helped finance the purchase of land. But until 1868 in Utah, land was not purchased; but was assigned by the church authorities to adult members, so there was not the same need for a bank.
