Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, 1850
Built in 1995
Originally, this one-story adobe structure housed the Salt Lake City Mint, which produced Utah’s first gold coins from California gold dust in 1849-50. The first issue of the Deseret News was printed in that building on June 15, 1850, using a small Ramage hand press. The original publication was a weekly, printed on Saturday, and local church leaders delivered the paper at church the next day. Subscriptions in 1850 sold at $2.50 for a six-month term, or fifteen cents an issue.
Ours is an exact replica of that original press where we print flyers and newspapers just as it was done 150 years agoone page at a time.
