JOHN PACK HOME

Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, 1848
Built in 2001

John Pack was one of the scouts sent ahead by the vanguard company of pioneers to explore the Salt Lake Valley and determine its suitability for settlement. Brigham Young counseled John to make his home large enough to be multi-functional. Using adobe and frame construction, Pack built this dwelling that was eventually used as a store, a dance hall, a tavern, and a school. It was originally known as Pack’s Tavern. John’s wife, Julia, lived in this house from 1848 to 1896. In 1852, it was used for the first classes taught at the University of Deseret, predecessor to the University of Utah.

Our replica building, a reception center, is one of several places throughout the Park that can be rented for one-of-a-kind parties and events.

You can rent this building for your family reunion, church activity or business meeting or dinner. Call 801-924-7502.
