WILLIAM V. & SARAH JANE
BURNETT LOG HOME

Eden, Weber County, 1868
Relocated in 1999

William Van Dawson Burnett, born in France of Scottish parents, and his wife, Sarah Jane Wilde, born in England, built this cabin in Eden as temporary housing while they gathered timber to build a home in Farr West. After living there for five years, they returned to Eden and skidded this cabin over to their newly acquired land two miles distant.

When built, the cabin lacked a fireplace or stove, so for warmth the family used many blankets and huddled together. They also gathered grasses from around the cabin to stuff their tickings (mattresses). William and Sarah had fourteen children, with twelve surviving to maturity. They lived in the home for nine years with nine of their children before moving to a newly built home in Eden.

Living in near poverty, their livestock were used to provide milk, butter, and eggs rather than meat. To supplement their diet, the children gathered grasshoppers, pulled off their legs, and ate them in grasshopper stew.
