Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, 1882
(first used as a hospital)
Built in 2003
Most local physicians in Utah practiced Thompsonian herbal medicine, and few midwives were available to assist in the delivery of babies. Due to inadequate medical care, Brigham Young sent three women to the East to study medicine at reputable medical schools. He believed that female doctors should care for women. The Relief Society opened the first Deseret Hospital in 1882. In 1884, the hospital moved to a former Deseret University building, replicated here, with accommodations for forty patients. Dr. Mattie Hughes Cannon served as resident physician. The hospital functioned until the Dr. Groves LDS Hospital opened in 1905.
As the home of the Utah Quilt Guild, the building houses exhibits on the history of quilting in Utah. An impressive collection of antique quilts is also on display. |
