The tithing office and yard was an important economic and social part of every LDS community. Faithful Latter-day Saints paid 10 percent of their gain to the Church. The Church encouraged its members to pay tithing in U.S. currency whenever possible, however, tithing was most often paid in produce or labor. For example, a farmer might have taken one load in ten of hay to the tithing barn to be stored until it could be either sold, exchanged for money or other products, or allocated to needy members of the town. Tithing offices also served as general stores.
