Manti, Sanpete County, 1854
Built in 1995
Phineas Cook constructed Manti’s first mill at the mouth of Manti’s City Creek Canyon. The mill’s workings were moved to a creek located within the walls of Manti Fort three years later because Indians murdered both the miller and a guard while working at the mill. The construction of the new mill was coordinated by Christian Nielsen, a newly arrived Danish immigrant, and was used to grind grain into flour. The mill was a one-and-one-half-story building made of oolitic limestone, and held two sets of millstones powered by a waterwheel. The mill was replaced with a roller mill in 1897.
