MADSEN FURNITURE COMPANY

Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County 1875
Built in 2002

The store was founded by Hans and Louise Madsen, emigrants from Denmark whose forefathers were furniture craftsmen famous for their “perlemorkiste” (hand-crafted chests inlaid with mother of pearl.) Converts to the LDS Church, the couple arrived in the Utah Territory in 1875 and eventually had eight children. One son, Peter William Madsen (or P.W.), was especially interested in the business and developed into a first-class merchant under his mother’s tutelage. The P.W. Madsen Furniture Company was in business for 125 years before it closed in 2000. Prior to its closing it held the honor as the longest running, family-owned and operated retail furniture store in the nation, employing seven generations of Madsens.
