ASHBY DUGOUT

Representational structure
Built in 1993

This structure is typical of the first shelters utilized in many settlements. These temporary dwellings were usually dug into the sloping sections of a trail or riverbed, using logs or blocks of sod for the front. Roofs were made of brush or reeds and covered with sod. Doors were made out of whatever was available, anything from animal skins to wagon covers, or, for the fortunate, a wooden door. These homes provided good protection from the cold, although dirt, bugs, mice, and snakes were near-constant problems.
