(FIREMAN’S SOCIAL HALL)
Salt Lake City, Utah 1899
Built in 2000
Ottinger Hall was built as a social hall and museum for the members of the “Veteran Volunteer Fireman’s Association,” which was organized in 1890 under the city’s first fire chief, Jesse C. Little. In the 1850s, brigades were organized into fire companies within each ecclesiastical ward, adopting the motto: “We aim to aid and work to save.” George Ottinger, who in addition to being the first paid fire chief, was also a talented artist. His works are included in the Hall’s exhibits. Among many fire-related artifacts found in the hall is a hand-pump cart built in Utah in 1853.
