PIONEER CEMETERY

Salt Lake City, Utah 1847
Relocated in 1986

Utah’s first pioneer burial site was in Salt Lake City in block 49 (on 200 West between 300 and 400 South) where beginning in 1847, at least 32 pioneers, mostly children, were buried. Lost to memory for decades, the site was discovered during construction work in 1986. Unfortunately, all the remains could not be identified on the basis of existing records. The bodies were reburied at This is the Place Heritage Park, overlooking the valley they came to settle.

Our beautiful little cemetery is approximately 90 feet square, surrounded by a wrought iron fence. Inside the cemetery are white headstones, void of names and dates, but full of mystery and small-town charm.
