GREAT SALT LAKE CITY SOCIAL HALL

Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County 1853
Built in 1980

The Social Hall was the center for social and cultural events in Great Salt Lake City. The original building was made from adobe and sandstone, with the interior and exterior woodwork exemplifying the pioneers’ use of Greek Revival ornamentation. The lower floor had a dining area with tables and benches and a fully equipped kitchen, while the upper story had a 20 foot by 40 foot stage and a large dance floor. Our replica is much smaller than the original structure.

After the famous Salt Lake Theatre was completed in 1862, the Social Hall was used as a gymnasium, library, and school. The building was torn down in 1922, but remnants of the original foundation can be seen in the Social Hall Heritage Museum at the junction of Social Hall Avenue and State Street in downtown Salt Lake City.
