EAGLE GATE

Salt Lake City, Utah 1859
Built in 2001

This scaled down replica of the Eagle Gate marks the transition from the present to the past. The original gate was erected in 1859 at the entrance to Brigham Young’s property, and lead to the mouth of City Creek Canyon. The original eagle, hand-carved of wood by Ralph Ramsey, can be seen at the Pioneer Memorial Museum, in Salt Lake City. The gate and eagle have been widened and enlarged over the years to accommodate traffic. The present 4,000-pound bronze eagle features a wingspan of 20 feet and caps the 76-foot span Eagle Gate. It is located at State Street and South Temple streets adjacent to Brigham Young’s Beehive House in downtown Salt Lake City.
