Eagle Gate
Brigham Young owned extensive property in downtown Salt Lake City, UT, and he commissioned artist Ralph Ramsay to carve a large wooden eagle to crown an arch across State Street, where it marked the beginning of Young’s property. The current Eagle Gate on State Street today is the fourth iteration of the gate.
DID YOU KNOW?
With limited resources available, Ralph Ramsay carved the eagle from five different blocks of wood: one for the body, another for the neck and head, one for each wing, and one for a beehive upon which the eagle rested. The wood came from City Creek Canyon and was held together with iron.
