Deseret News Print Shop

  • Built in Salt Lake City, Utah 1849

  • Replicated in 1996

The first issue of the Deseret News was printed here on June 15, 1850, using a small Ramage hand press. The print shop features a working replica of that original press, and flyers and newspapers are printed just as they were 150 years ago. Originally, the newspaper was issued weekly on Saturday, and local church leaders delivered it at church the next day. In 1850, subscriptions were $2.50 for a six-month term or fifteen cents per issue.

Did you know? Early newspapers were often made of recycled rags. The November 30, 1850 issue of Deseret News pleaded “Rags! Rags! Rags! Save your rags, everybody in Deseret, save your rags; old wagon covers, tents, quilts, shirts, etc., are wanted for paper.”
