Shaving Parlor

  • Representational Building 1860's
  • Replicated in 1996

This is a reproduction of a typical small wood-frame barber shop. Barber shops offered shaves, haircuts, and even minor medical and dental services. Though medical duties and bloodletting had been a part of a barber's duties since the 11th century, by the late 19th century the tradition was dwindling. In general, most barbers used a single mug to hold shaving soap and reused towels for all their customers. This caused outbreaks of barber's itch and instigated sanitary laws for barbers.
