Fairbanks Home

  • Built in Payson, Utah mid-1850's

  • Relocated in 1981

When John and Sarah Fairbanks settled in Utah, they lived in their covered wagon, using carpet for the door and a single stove for warmth. They later moved to Payson, where they built a log cabin to live in until this home was completed. This unusually large house with its ornamental detailing indicates the upper middle class status achieved by the Fairbanks family. The upper bedroom on the south side, with its own fireplace, was called "Brigham Young's Room" because he used the Fairbanks home as a headquarters while staying in Payson on his way to southern communities.

Did you know? Pioneers of many faiths traveled west on the Oregon Trail, causing the Latter-Day Saints to create their own route, the Mormon Trail. Whereas the Oregon Trail followed the south side of the Platte River, the Mormon Trail followed the North side of the Platte River as far as it went. This created a separate leg of travel, distancing the Saints from other travelers.
